IMG_4820Hello everybody! Hope you missed me, because I missed sharing our funny games with all of you. I know summer is a time for holidays by the sea. I hope all of you had a chance to swim and sunbathe and have a really great time. Although summer has gone, holiday season is still running and many families are on their way to the Southern coast of Turkey. So as I promised in my previous article, I have some funny games for you and your kids in English. Besides, I want to remind you that your kid’s future depends on you now. If you give him or her this chance, I mean with second language, in the future you’ll get amazing results and many thanks from your children.

Playing in the sand is a great activity for very small children as it helps them explore textures and understand basic spacial concepts like fullness and emptiness. In general, babies are ready to play in the sand around 12 to 18 months, although some infants take to the beach or sandbox even before the end of their first year.

One of the simplest games for parents to play with their children in the sand is “Hide and find”, because it can involve any small toy. Just bury a toy in wet or dry sand and have the toddler search for it. ” Where is the box? Where Is our red box? Look for it! Is it here? No, it is not. Is it here? Yes! Good for you! You have found it!” For older kids hide pairs of similar toys and have the child find matching objects.

IMG_4818Parents can also draw patterns in the sand with sticks or their fingers and then invite their children to do the same. You can use simple words just to have a good time ” Honey, let’s draw the sun. Take a stick. Good for you! I can draw a bird also. Draw the line like this.”

One more great game for small children is building a sand castle. What you need are some buckets and shovels. You can tell a story about prince or princess while making the castle. Just let this activity be magic like, “Let us build a castle for a princess Şule. She is very beautiful princess. She lives in the highest tower, so we need the biggest bucket we have. Let’s fill it with sand. Let’s overturn it. Look! What a nice shape! Now we have to make a home for her parents, brothers and sisters. Good for you my baby!”

Preschool-age children love hunting for small objects just as much as babies do.  The treasures can be spread out over a large area. Bury small toys or other objects in the sand and give a child a shovel to help hunt for treasure and a pail to carry found items around. ” Where is the treasure? Let’s us find it! Is it here? Let’s dig up the sand.”

IMG_4819Big, old socks are a great way for small children to interact with sand. A child should receive one sock and a shovel to help fill it with sand. Tie off the tops of the socks with rubber bands and encourage the children to mold their socks into different shapes. Have them use markers to draw noses, mouths, and eyes on their socks, resembling faces, or to make whatever other patterns or designs they like, “Let us make a cat. Or a dog? We need to make a head and eyes and ears.”

As you see learning English is so simple while playing. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes while talking. You are always learning in your life, aren’t you? Why can’t you learn together with your child? Don’t you think that child also can be your teacher? Accept the fact that kids have amazing gift of learning foreign languages times faster than adults. Give your child this chance for brighter future!

Wish all of you to have a good time!

Sincerely yours,

Irina

IMG_4071Hello everybody. It’s Irina again. How are you doing? How is your summertime going? Did you miss me and my English lessons? As for me, I am not happy with the weather nowadays. It’s raining all the time and we can’t spend as much time outdoors with my girl as we want. But when the weather is good for at least an hour, we put on our clothes and run outside to enjoy fresh air and freedom. And do you know what? Sometimes we have our English time outdoors! Why? Because every morning, rain or shine, we spend a couple of hours speaking English. We can take our lessons with us to the streets, parks, and even to the seaside. All we need are some toys and a good mood. Let me describe to you some of our games.

IMG_4209To learn or repeat colors we use some colorful balls. For the beginning we need just four of them: green, yellow, red and blue. The words we use are also simple: “What is this, honey? This is a ball! A green ball!” We show our baby a ball and throw it to her with these words: “And what is this? One more ball! A red ball! Yes my baby, a red ball!” One by one we show all the balls before we really start playing. We can throw the ball to each other: “Throw me a ball! Good for you!” and of course catch it: “Catch a ball, sweety! You are my champion!”. We can play hide and seek for balls: “Where is the ball, my sweet sugar? Let’s find the ball! Yes, here it is. We have found our yellow ball. Now let’s find our blue ball.” To make sure we’re also learning how to share, we say things like:” Give me a ball, my baby! Let’s play together”. Instead of balls we can use other toys. It’s good to use toys that kid loves most.

IMG_3883Of course we can play this game in the water. Summer time is the time to go to the seaside. We can’t miss one or two weeks of our English lessons. That’s why we have to play games in English by the seaside. During the summer, some mothers also face a problem of long trips by car. A naughty child can turn the trip into a disaster. My family has come up with an escape game to deal with this. You can use finger toys or a glove-toy to play in a car, and don’t forget about books also.

Recently, we had a family trip to the Black Sea coast. We spent over two hours in the car with my 16 month old daughter. And do you know what? When she wasn’t sleeping, she read books out loud. Of course she is too small to read, but she pretended she was reading. She was turning pages and saying something while we all pretended not noticing her. I don’t like to interfere with such moments. I was so impressed and pleased. I think it’s kind of blessing when your child loves books.

By the seaside we can play water balls and use words I have mentioned above. We can also build send castles and play some games in water. Next time I will tell you about games in water that you can use in the pool and at home while having bath with your toddler. Have a good time and enjoy your summer!

Sincerely yours,

Irina.

Playing English Peek-A-Boo With Your Child

Hello my dear friends!
image (3)This is Irina again with my non-stop talking about early English learning. This time I would like to start with my recent impressions and experiences.
Last month I had a trip to my native country, which is Ukraine. I had a flight from Istanbul and I was greatly impressed by the amount of bilingual  kids I saw at the airport! When you have a child yourself, you always notice other kids around as they noticing each other and start chattering in a language only they can understand. And when you hear them speaking two languages at once, (for example: Italian with the father and Russian with the mother), you feel so impresses and inspired!
I think this is such a wonderful chance for kids, and such a great opportunity for parents to bring up kids in two languages. It is so simple when two parents speak different languages, especially  if the mother or farther is a foreigner. I have met so many interesting families on the Internet and in real life, that one can’t even imagine the different kinds of families!image (1)
For example, mother and father speak different languages, and they move to another country where people speak a totally different language. That’s ok, they are adults and can learn…But what about the kids? Can you imagine how kids grow up in such families where they hear one language from mother, another from father, and third language in a society? They are brought up in three languages, which is amazing! The only problem is keeping those languages that the mother and father speak, when the society the kids live in is different. Life is so interesting, and you understand this when you meet such families.
Why am I talking about this? Because in my practice I meet many families who think that learning English from the 0+ age is not good, or even can have a bad influence on kid’s speech and so on. That is so untrue!!! Learning foreign languages is so amazing in every age, especially for toddlers – it has remarkable influence on their future.
imageYou can even learn English together with your kids using games. I consider that one of the most popular games among toddlers and kids is “Hide and Seek”. As you can play it even when your baby  can’t walk, by holding your baby and looking for toys that you have hidden before in different places in a room, it helps a lot in learning English. All you have to know are the names of the toys( dog, cat, car, book) and several simple sentences. Such as “Where is our ball? Let us find our ball!” You can say this when you are looking for a toy all around the room. It can help if you hide the toy together with your child so that he or she can find it and feel like a champion.
image (2)Other phrases you can use are “Peek-a-boo! Here it is! We have found it!” , “Peek-a-boo! Good for you! You have found it!” When you find a toy together, you should play a little with it using English language. For example, a Taddy Bear can talk to your child “Hello! I am Taddy Bear! What is your name?” he says. And you should help your child answering “My name is Hatice! Nice to meet you Taddy Bear!” When you find a book you can suggest your baby to read it for the bear. This way you can grow their interests in books, as well as helping their social skills. And what can be better than that?
I hope you like our English games and will play them with your kids as soon as possible!
My best wishes to all of you,
Irina

Sahi nedir oyun?

Using Books to Learn English

Hi there! It’s Irina again with English Early Learning Methods. I want to remind you one more time how important it is to learn English from the first month of a baby’s life! Toddlers are so fast to learn and absorb information. They are incredibly talented and they can learn foreign language much faster and easier then adults. Also, learning a second language helps develop a baby in different ways, such as developing brain possibilities, developing character, personality, and so on.

I would like to stress reading books as one of the main methods in my Early Learning English System. I am completely sure that reading books in general, and reading books in English have great influence on bringing up a personality. Not only children, but even adults enlarge their knowledge with the help of books.

They say if you want your child to start saying his first words earlier, you have to read for at least 30 minutes a day for her or him to listen. For the beginning, it is going to be just playing games while mommy is reading. But the time will come when your toddler will take a book in his own hands (and maybe even taste it with his teeth!) Little by little your baby will start to make some noises, pretending to read a book like a mother. Our kids try to perform like us, so why not show them a good example? Throw off your cell phone while your kid is around and open a book!

image (4)Every day I try to read as many books in English as I can out loud. My girl is fond of listening to my reading, or just turning on pages herself. One can think this has no purpose, but I can argue with that! While listening to mothers reading, kids absorb many things at once: vocabulary, pronunciation, and even grammar on unconscious level.

Time will pass and all those words and word combinations, even sentences will come up in your child’s speech in English. This is a method that many mothers have been practicing during many years in Europe, and other countries all over the world. This is what we enjoy every day with my baby girl, and what I always advise for Turkish and Russian mothers. What can be better than mothers voice reading a story? And of course starting from three months old, a child can be given a colorful English book with bright pictures to look at to discover our world.

Thanks God nowadays we have a great choice of books in English in Turkey, and all over the world. It is easy to walk in a bookstore and ask for help, or it can be done with one click on an Internet store. The only problem is our fear and, maybe even a little laziness. It is always hard to make a first step…But let’s not forget about our duties. We are not only mothers, we are teachers and conductors for our precious sweet angels called kids.

I hope this article will help many of you to choose a right way in brining up your kids.

With love and respect,
İrina Akbulut
